The honest answer is that there is no magic number of weeks, because it is not really a question about time. It is a question about which kind of boat you want, and the different kinds run out at very different speeds.
What actually runs out first
Malta's charter season runs roughly April to October, with July and August at the peak. Within that, availability is not one pool — it is several, and they drain unevenly:
- Catamarans go first. They are the thinnest supply on the island relative to demand — everyone with a group wants the deck space — and in high season the good ones are spoken for well ahead.
- The larger motor yachts go next, for the same reason: few hulls, strong demand for celebrations and corporate days.
- Small motor boats, speedboats and RIBs stay available far later. There are simply more of them, so a late decision usually still finds one.
So "how far ahead" depends on what you are booking. A catamaran for eight in August is a plan-ahead booking; a speedboat for four in June often is not.
The shoulder months change the answer
Late May, June, September and early October are usually bookable at much shorter notice — with one caveat: some operators reduce their fleet outside the peak, so choice narrows even as pressure falls. Book the boat and the day, not the destination
Whatever the lead time, do not book rigidly around one bay. The wind decides the route on the morning, and a skipper choosing a different coast is normal, not a failure. Booking "the boat and the day" and deciding the route on the day is the resilient plan; booking "the trip to Comino" six weeks out is a promise nobody can actually make you.
The deposit is part of the timing
If you are going bareboat, the security deposit has to clear before you take the boat — and it can be a substantial sum sitting on your card at exactly the moment you least want it there. Ask the amount and the method when you book, not on the pontoon. It is also worth asking early because it affects which card you bring.
The practical summary
Decide the boat type first. If it is a catamaran or a big motor yacht in July or August, enquire as soon as your dates firm up.
